One of the easiest things to overlook at the start of your season is a recruitment plan. The best way to prepare yourself for the next level, is to crush it at your current one - academically, athletically and personally. But, in general, it’s better to be too prepared than not at all.

August is more or less a dead month for recruitment. The NESCACs can pull off a little bit of recruitment with such late pre season starts, but that’s about it. Then, your own pre season is going to be in full swing as well.

September isn’t going to be drastically different.

Teams are going to need to see how their current team and crop of projected starters are panning out before really deciding on what to do with their remaining recruiting slots. But, that doesn’t mean all communications should stop either.

You should still be sending coaches weekly updates on how your season is going. A great practice is just to simply create a weekly highlight tape that gradually builds on itself week to week so you’re never scrambling to put one together at the 11th hour when a coach will inevitably ask you for one.

A weekly check-in text to a coach might look something like this:

Quick update: Won this weekend. {Insert stats 1, 2 and 3} Here’s a quick clip of each and link to longer highlight tape. If possible would love to come up and see a game this season. Please lmk if better weekend to do that. Thx so much.

That’s really it.

I’ve found Fridays are great days to try to catch up with coaches. Teams are either traveling or doing walk through so there is more “down time” than usual. If not Fridays, Sundays/Mondays sometimes can be good days as well as most teams will have one or the other day off during the season.

To recap:

  • Create weekly highlights

  • Send weekly check-ins

  • Inquire softly about game day visits

  • Try Fridays and Sun/Mon as check-in days.
